Located at 3 620 masl. ( 11 968 ft) La Paz, the highest de facto capital in the world, is a city that amazes visitors. Houses cling to the hills, defying gravity and the cholitas (native women) with their colourful, typical clothing enliven the city. La Paz is surrounded by forested hills and crowned by the majestic Mount Illimani (6,400 m) A diversity of trails and attractions awaits you is the commercial, financial, and industrial center of Bolivia. The city of La Paz is currently the seat of Government, established since October 25, 1899, the date in which General José de Manuel Pando assumed the presidency of the Republic. La Paz rebelled against Spanish oppression in 1809 under the direction of Pedro Domingo Murillo, who was hanged along with other patriots on July 16th of the same year.
Here some important sightseeing to visit:
*MURILLO`S HOUSE, Dedicated to Don Pedro Domingo Murillo who headed the revolution of 1809, in which the scream for freedom of the citizens of La Paz, that were already fed up with the Spanish domain, was heard. In the centre of the square a monument that immortalises the martyr has been built. The house was constructed at the beginning of the XIX century and it has been declared as a national monument In the surroundings, there they are: the Presidential Palace, the headquarters of the Congress of the Republic and the Cathedral.
*MUSEUM OF TIWANAKU, Founded in 1922 by the archaeologist Arturo Posnansky, this gallery counts with Lithic and ceramic and many other examples from the culture that flourished in Tiwanaku and other autochthonous and ancient cultures from the area
*TEMPLE AND CONVENT OF SAN FRANCISCO, Its centennial history is marked by tragic events that, in spite of its fateful consequences, could never dent its impressive beauty. The first construction of this temple of Baroque style goes back to the middle of the 16th century; but, in the 18th century, San Francisco had to be reconstructed, as the inclemencies of the climate caused it serious damages.
*MARKET OF WITCHES, Everything it is needed for the elaboration of traditional remedies, capable to cure any ailment or illness, is offered in the very old streets of Sagárnaga and Linares, in the colonial area of La Paz. Here handmade products of great quality are also offered.
*TIWANAKU, This impressive temple is located at 72 kilometres from La Paz and was built by the men of this culture, that developed in the highland, approximately between the years 1580 B.C and 1172 A.C. The tiahuanacotas archaeological remains -consisted of a ceremonial and a religious area- are one of the most splendid shows of the architectural development reached by the first inhabitants of the Andean heights. The Door of the Sun, the Temple of Kalasasaya, the Pyramids of Akhapana and Puma Punku, the monoliths Fraile and Ponce and a great quantity of tenon heads, are the main monuments that can be appreciated.
*CANYON OF PALCA, Located at 30 kilometres, Southeast from the city of La Paz, there is a picturesque little town called Palca. The canyon, which bears the same name, has an amazing view of the Illimani. At every step there are rock formations that look like gothic cathedrals and obelisks, which have been formed by the water. The canyon of Palca is at a height of 200 meters above the sea level, it begins in the entrance of the town of Ovejuno, that area is known as “Cumbre de las Animas” (The Summit of the Souls).
*CHACALTAYA, it is the highest skiing area of the world. The Chacaltaya (5 580 meters high), is one of the mountains of the Real Mountain range of the Oriental Andes and it is only at 36 kilometers from La Paz. From their summit, you can appreciate the cold summits of the Illimani, the Mururata and the Huayna Potosí, among others, in all their magnificence.
*MOON VALLEY, If there was not the asphalt serpentine or there were no coughs due to the combustion of the automobiles, you can even think that you have left the earth and have been transferred to the surface of the moon, because at this corner of La Paz -at less than 20 kilometres from the centre- the erosion has given some incredible, surprising formsto the rocks. Forms that are strange to this world.

COROICO SUB TROPICAL JUNGLE, Descending to an altitude of 1 782 masl., at 95 kilometres from La Paz city, there is Coroico, one of the main towns, which is within the Province of Nor Yungas and one of the main tourists attractions of La Paz.
The semi-tropical climate of the area and the beautiful scenery provide the perfect combination for visitors to have a great and unforgettable experience, visiting also the Cotapata Park, walking through the Road of Choro, taking baths at some of the local resorts, observing the fauna and flora of the place, while enjoying to typical music and folklore of the area. At some of the surrounding areas there are a few small communities of African-Bolivian residents, specially in the towns of Tocaña, Chijchipa and Mururata, which are often visited mostly because of the very unique dances and rituals that they practice there, such as the Saya (Filed Master’s Dance), the Semba (Fertility Dance), The Mauchi (Funeral ceremony) and there is also a Black-African King, a descendent of Bonifacio Pinedo, Julio Pinedo, who was crowned king in 1992.
